If you've ever paid for backlinks to your website, thinking it will help, you should know Google is *very* clear this is against their rules. And they are adept at catching and penalising sites that have done it. I see it every day.

The solution is to have me go through all the links they see to your website and have them disavow (ignore) the ones they will see as paid for / spam links.

Low quality links hurt, not help, your ranking and search engine optimisation.

For example, every single person I've ever seen selling a 'BBC link', 'Apple' or 'Huffington Post' link are actually just creating user profiles on those systems and sticking URLs in those profiles.

That's not really a BBC link. People think they're going to get something in a news article, but more often than not they're on pages Google doesn't even index.

Because Google says explicitly that trying to manipulate your own link profile is against their terms; there is no such thing as paying for 'google safe' links, or 'white hat' link creation. It's an oxymoron. 99% of people selling what they say are 'google friendly' links are just using simple pieces of automated software anyway - they're just clicking a few buttons in perhaps 20 seconds - and charging for it.

The effect of buying them is that yes, your rank will usually improve for a few months until Google realises what you're doing, and then they slam you.
