Chapter 1
Rick was full of anticipation as he entered the Cheesecake Factory restaurant, but he was a bit nervous. He was beginning to like Valerie – a lot. They had met by chance in December 2011, and in that first meeting he got the feeling that she was somebody special. Somebody he would love to know better. Somebody he enjoyed talking to. And now, he was beginning to realize, somebody he could love. A lot.
This was going to be their first date – inside a Cheesecake Factory place. It was a safe place – not too romantic, not too bold. It was safe because if the date went south they could cut their losses and make a break for it.
They needn’t have worried, though. Cupid was working overtime.

No one had dared to write on the wall since Edgar tried it a year earlier and felt the hard hand of Sister Nancy on his head, and its clear unwritten status was a display of the orphanage staff’s intolerance to wayward youngsters. A wall, just like his birthmark, that spelled the unchanging status of his woes; a way of life he could not escape. Just as he could not get rid of the birthmark on his face that had been his curse all his life, that wall had proved impenetrable. There was no way through it and there was no way around it.
